The Taal

“The Taal” is an addictively fun exploration of a traditional Indian musical concept set in the context of modern house music. Bright, upbeat, and percussive, “The Taal” is an undeniable dance track, and one that belongs on every DJ’s playlist this summer. “Taal” literally means “rhythm” and refers to the cycle of beats used to build a percussive rhythm within a piece of music. The concept is used within Indian music to conduct percussion players by vocalizing the sound and rhythm the drums should make. Likewise, the vocals heard on Ronak’s track are a form of Taal and create a highly textured and syncopated rhythm that’s impossible not to move to. The song also features other instrumental sounds that feel reminiscent of Indian traditional music while the characteristic drums and bass create the track’s driving and energetic atmosphere. Ronak also cleverly uses a delay effect on the vocal track to create an even more complex sense of rhythm and syncopation that builds throughout the song. At just three and a half minutes, it’s practically impossible not to restart this track as soon as it’s finished.
